Interview: Courtney Shilo

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest album, and what themes or stories you aimed to convey through your music?

The inspiration behind my latest album came from an experience where I was going through the different phases of a breakup. Each songs touches on a particular emotion that comes along with leaving somebody you really cared about. I wanted to convey the themes of regret, bargaining, acceptance and longing.

Music often has the power to transport people to different places and times. Can you describe a moment in your life when a particular song or album had a profound impact on you?

Every time I hear the album “Destiny Fulfilled” by Destiny’s Child, I am instantly transported back to my middle school self. This album had a huge impact on me in my adolescence. It taught me a lot about R&B music and how to properly structure an album. Its still one of my favorite albums to this day

Many artists have rituals or routines they follow before performing or recording. Do you have any unique or quirky pre-show or pre-recording rituals that you find help you get in the zone?

Before I perform I drink lots of water. I also like to eat Lifesaver gummies to keep my throat moisturized.

Your lyrics often tell a story or convey a message. Can you share the story behind one of your songs and the inspiration that led to its creation?

My latest single is a song called “Desire” was inspired by my longing to experience real love. I know a lot of people in this generation that feel shame for expressing their desire for love and a relationship, so I wanted to be vulnerable and express that in my own way.

If you could curate a music festival with a lineup of your dream artists, who would be the headliners, and what would the theme of the festival be?
If I could curate a music festival, I would include a lineup of contemporary female R&B artists such as Jazmine Sullivan, Summer Walker, Kiana Lede, and Ari Lennox.

Music can be a powerful tool for advocacy and change. Are there any social or political causes that you’re passionate about, and how does your music play a role in promoting these issues?
I am very passionate about promoting the well being and mental health of women. I hope that my music can resonate with women and help them along their journey of healing.

The music industry has evolved significantly with technology. How do you see artificial intelligence and emerging technologies impacting the creation and distribution of music in the future?

I believe that there can be some positive uses of AI in the industry, such as using it to help come up with artwork, treatments etc. However, the danger comes with deep-fakes, and using AI to duplicate an artist’s voice. This is where the morality of AI in music comes into question. I believe that there will be a huge push back in the future towards these kind of practices.

Many recording artists evolve over time. How do you see your musical journey changing and growing in the next decade?

I see my musical journey evolving into one that consists of me doing more behind the scenes work such as songwriting, background vocals, vocal producing, while also maintaining my career as an independent R&B artist.
