Interview: Destiny Malibu

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest album, and what themes or stories you aimed to convey through your music?

My fourth studio album is currently in the works, and I’m tremendously excited about it. The latest single, « Say My Name, » delves into my personal struggles with mental health and how I’ve triumphed over my darkest moments. A recurring theme in my music is hope. I aim to create music that uplifts and inspires. « Say My Name » narrates some of the toughest periods in my life and my journey towards finding light. It serves as an anthem of hope, emphasizing that genuine happiness comes from within, not external factors like wealth or popularity. The song resonates with those facing similar challenges, reminding them they’re not alone and encouraging them to seek help and support. By combining singing and elements of rap, I could convey intricate details of my story, adding unexpected dynamic shifts. The overwhelming positive response thus far has been incredible, and I’m grateful that people connect with the message. You can watch the full music video on YouTube here.

Music often has the power to transport people to different places and times. Can you describe a moment in your life when a particular song or album had a profound impact on you?

There are two songs that hold a very special place in my heart because they remind me of my parents. My dad introduced me to « Butterfly Kisses » by Bob Carlisle and expressed his wish for it to be played at my wedding, a moment I know will be emotional for both of us. My mom introduced me to « Angel Baby » by Rosie and the Originals, which always evokes strong emotions as it reminds me of her. It’s remarkable how music can trigger such profound memories, and I’m grateful to contribute to others’ cherished moments through my music.

Many artists have rituals or routines they follow before performing or recording. Do you have any unique or quirky pre-show or pre-recording rituals that you find help you get in the zone?

Before a show, I engage in mental, physical, and spiritual preparation. I have a collection of affirmations and thoughts on my phone that I read to myself, which significantly impacts my mindset before hitting the stage. As a performer, it’s crucial to be in the right headspace because the audience can sense your emotions. I believe that mindset is key; entering the stage with excitement and confidence creates a positive energy that resonates with the audience. My spiritual preparation involves prayer, while physically, I ensure I get enough sleep and eat well to be ready for the performance.

Your lyrics often tell a story or convey a message. Can you share the story behind one of your songs and the inspiration that led to its creation?

« Say My Name, » my latest release and music video, holds a special significance to me. The music video portrays a high school setting, reflecting my own struggles with mental health during that time. Despite being known as a bubbly person, I did privately face many internal battles. High school was a challenging period of self-discovery and change, and the song/video serves as a reminder of those times. However, it also signifies growth and resilience, as it showcases how far I’ve come since then. I hope the song resonates with anyone going through tough times, reminding them that there’s light at the end of the tunnel.

If you could curate a music festival with a lineup of your dream artists, who would be the headliners, and what would the theme of the festival be?

If I could curate my dream music festival, it would have a throwback era theme, reflecting my love for 90’s and Y2K fashion. The lineup would include Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Flume, Ariana Grande, Ellie Goulding, and MØ, alongside myself. It would be an honor to perform alongside these incredible artists and celebrate this era.

Music can be a powerful tool for advocacy and change. Are there any social or political causes that you’re passionate about, and how does your music play a role in promoting these issues? I’m passionate about mental health advocacy, which is evident through my podcast, « The Destiny Malibu Podcast, » focusing on self-development, self-help, and mental health. Incorporating these topics into my music has been impactful, allowing me to delve deeper into important issues. Through my platform, I aim to raise awareness about mental health, discuss prevention tools, and emphasize the power of seeking support.

The music industry has evolved significantly with technology. How do you see artificial intelligence and emerging technologies impacting the creation and distribution of music in the future?

AI and emerging technologies are poised to revolutionize every industry, including music. While AI can create music, I believe that human touch and authenticity will always be irreplaceable. As technology advances, the craving for real, authentic human music with heart and soul will likely increase.

Many recording artists evolve over time. How do you see your musical journey changing and growing in the next decade?

I thrive on growth and experimentation, constantly pushing boundaries and exploring different genres. In the next decade, I see myself evolving and expanding my musical horizons, experimenting with genre blends and continually striving to redefine pop music, keeping the journey exciting and dynamic.
