Interview: Derwin Daniels

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your latest album, and what themes or stories you aimed to convey through your music?

Positivity is the theme from the music I am playing on this latest project. The single “Brighter Than This” is the release that is hitting the airwaves and making progress on international charts. Thanks to producer, Felton Pilate and JEG Multimedia for getting this music played.

Music often has the power to transport people to different places and times. Can you describe a moment in your life when a particular song or album had a profound impact on you?

Just this week I thought about the song “ I Can See Clearly Now The Rain Has Gone” by Johnny Nash. Someone in my family is going through some health challenges and this song took me back to childhood and the message made me smile and laugh. Music has that effect. It can make you remember good, bad or happy times.

Many artists have rituals or routines they follow before performing or recording. Do you have any unique or quirky pre-show or pre-recording rituals that you find help you get in the zone?

I sometimes like to say a prayer to center myself and think about playing for God and not myself. It helps calm my nerves before hitting the stage.

Your lyrics often tell a story or convey a message. Can you share the story behind one of your songs and the inspiration that led to its creation?

My latest single has no lyrics, but captures the essence of joy. The song is in a major key which I think relates to happiness and joy. Some of my songs have hooks that relate to a relationship or something happening in my life. Phrases sometimes makes me think of capturing that moment in a song.

If you could curate a music festival with a lineup of your dream artists, who would be the headliners, and what would the theme of the festival be?

I love horn bands like Earth Wind and Fire, Tower of Power or Chicago. My festival would include all of these groups.

Music can be a powerful tool for advocacy and change. Are there any social or political causes that you’re passionate about, and how does your music play a role in promoting these issues?

The world is in turmoil most of the time. I think of music as an escape from what’s surrounding people. I think peace amongst people is the number one message I try to convey.

The music industry has evolved significantly with technology. How do you see artificial intelligence and emerging technologies impacting the creation and distribution of music in the future?

Well, I can take the music back when the musicians had to record the song at the same time without multi-tracking. All those souls were in the room getting it done. You can hear that within the recordings. I think that technology plays a role in so many people being able to create music, but the study, thought and phrasing of new material is getting lost. That’s just my opinion, some others may feel that that is an awkward way of thinking about the creation of music.

Many recording artists evolve over time. How do you see your musical journey changing and growing in the next decade?

With experience comes a maturity in the presentation and creation of music. Here in the US youth are propelled into the listening audience. I’ve found that in other cultures age is not a factor in the success of music. I would like to continue to travel and play amongst musicians all over the world.
